On a word ‘bilig’

Abstract

Mongolians have a long tradition to teach and explain their children the ancestor’s words, wisdoms and teachings for their education. These words, wisdoms and teachings from not only of Chingis Khan but of his ancestors, descendants, officials, ministers and scholars were called ‘bilig surgaal’, which have prevailing meanings as knowledge, spiritual power, talent and diligence. The word “bilgе” which has the same etymology as “bilig” was a title of “tsetsen (wise)” given to khans, lords and nobles who knew the deep meaning of ancestors’ words and teachings, and were intellectuals with ability and knowledge to govern.
