Abstract

Computational Linguistics/CL is an interdisciplinary field dealing with the statistical and rule-based modeling of natural language from a computational perspective. CL originated with efforts in the United States in the 1950s to use computers to automatically translate texts from foreign languages, particularly Russian scientific journals, into English. When machine translation failed to yield accurate translations right away, automated processing of human languages was recognizing far more complex than had originally been assumed. In order to translate one language into another, it was observed that one had to understand the grammar of both languages, including both morphology and syntax. In order to understand syntax, one had to also understand the semantics and the lexicon, and even understand something of the pragmatics of language use. Thus, what started as an effort to translate between languages evolved into an entire discipline devoted to understanding how to represent and process natural languages using computer.
It is a newly developing field in Mongolian Linguistics. So, the article surveys sixty years of work in computational language processing. The article has the following sections: - What’s the CL? - A brief history of CL Subfields and Applications - CL and Linguistics The main goal of the field is to build psychologically adequate models o f human language processing capabilities on the basis of knowledge about the way in which humans acquire, store, and process the language. - to build functionally correct models of human language processing capabilities on the basis of knowledge about the world and about language elicited from people and stored in the system.
