Oral and written literature exert a reciprocal influence on one another. Characters and motifs from folktales and epics that circulate among communities often shape written literature, while conversely, folktales and legends initially preserved in written form may evolve into oral narratives within communities. A prominent example of this interrelation appears in myths and tales concerning tengeriin dagina and tengeriin züüdnii khün. One notable oral narrative a celestial woman (tengeriin dagina and tengeriin züüdnii khün) who descends from the sky to the human realm, marries a mortal man, and eventually returns to the celestial realm. This character, often referred to as the tengeriin dagina or the tengeriin züüdnii khün, represents a figure of transcendence and liminality between the human and divine worlds.
This study employs a structuralist approach to analyze a myth involving tengeriin züüdnii khün, seeking to illuminate the connections between character, motif, and conflict across myth, folktale, legend, and written literature. The use of the tengeriin züüdnii khün character in oral and written narratives, through motifs of resistance to marriage and family, reveals an archetypal character shaped by these recurring conflicts.
