Abstract

According to eiders' accounts, six issues of the Lam naryn setguul (Lamas' Magazine) were published. We were able to locate copies of nos. 3 and 4 from 1936, as well as nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6 from 1937. Numbers 3 and 4, 1 and 2, and 4 and 5 were published as combined issues. The two issues are both in Monglian language written in two different scripts, though the 1936 issues have Mongolian language text in Tibetan script first, while the 1937 issues have articles in the Mongolian script first. This arrangement likely reflects the literacy and reading skills of the monastic audience.

Our study of this magazine leads to the following conclusions:

1. The articles published in this magazine constitute an important historical source for the study of events of the 1930s.

2. The transcription of Khuree lamas' spoken language using Tibetan characters provides valuable insight into speech paterns at that time.

3. This publication essentially established a definitive system for writing Mongolian- language texts using Tibetan characters, unifying the previously existing systems.
