Difficulties on the understanding of some Mongolian idioms to Mongolian language learners

Abstract

The acquisition of proverbs, phrases and idioms of any languages can describe the level of his/her linguistic and cultural knowledge.

Why is it complicated to understand some Mongolian idioms for non-Mongolian speakers? Because Mongolian idioms focus long history, traditional culture and custom, as well as ideology and lifestyle of Mongolian people.

According to our research, we have found some problems on it, as the following:

1. There are numbers of words or phrases in Mongolian idioms which are not in any other languages.

2. Mongolian idioms show the culture or custom which are not focused in other languages.

3. Ideology, evaluation and thinking of Mongolian people are different from other nationalities.

Therewith, we are classifying the idioms into two categories:

1. Idioms of which meaning is not deep. It means that Mongolian idioms can be understood easily from simple explanation.

For example: Ухаан cyyx, будаа идэх, үнэ хадах, дээлийн гол etc.

2. Idioms of which meaning is deep. It means that Mongolian idioms cannot be understood easily from simple explanation.

For example: Ухаанд нь ухна ишиг үхэх, уургын морь шиг, тосонд умбаж, торгонд хөлбөрөх, бухын доодохыг харж үнэг турж үхэх etc.

То sum up, the idioms are the most complicated part in lexicology. Therefore, non-Mongolian speakers have to get the skills of using Mongolian language in each level of communication.

Eventually, the most important goal of Mongolists is to be always initiative for doing research work on that.
