On the words related to ‘speak, say’ in the Secret Hisotry of the Mongols

Abstract

Speech’s semantic brethren ‘speak’ and ‘say’ to include all forms of verbal expression are commonly used and the root of ‘say (өгүүл-)’ is being actively favored in written language. However the word ‘speak’ hadn’t been occurred in the monuments of Middle Mongolian, the words ‘tell’, ‘say’, and ‘speak respectfully (айлтгах)’ had been used owing to different situations. For example, ‘tell’ was generally used for discussing any incident while ‘speak respectfully’ for the king or high ranks. Although, some meanings of these words were forgotten or misunderstood nowadays, they are still kept and used constantly in the vocabulary of the Mongolian language.
