The Study on the Origin and Development of Long Vowels

Abstract

The derivation of long vowels represents one of the major developments in the historical phonology of Mongolian. The origin and development of long vowels have been studied for nearly two centuries, yet many issues remain contested. These include the precise time of their formation, the phonetic environments in which they arose, possible external influences, and how these were reflected in the written language. Another debated issue is the influence of derivational long vowels on neighboring sounds. In this paper, we discuss all of these disputed problems.
