Corrections of Misreadings and Restoration of Missed Characters in the Transcriptions of Khitan Small Script Epitaphs

Abstract

This paper takes as its point of departure the commonly observed phrase found in Khitan Small Script epitaphs. It analyzes and compares the structural features and terminology appearing at the end of the inscription texts immediately preceding this phrase. Employing philological and textual criticism methods, the study identifies and corrects erroneous entries and transcription mistakes in the interpretations included in Further Studies on the Khitan Small Script as well as in four recently published digital transcriptions of Khitan epitaphs. Additionally, this paper proposes restorations for certain missing characters. The organization and correction of digital transcriptions are of critical scholarly value for the accurate interpretation and systematic compilation of Khitan textual materials.
