Developing the reading skill for the students in non professional course

Implementation of multiple projects and activities regarding intensification of English training and promotion of its effectiveness has been a priority of the Mongolian government in the past decades. This article aims to look at ways to enhance students’ reading comprehension and reading strategies to become effective readers. We conducted a survey among 100 non-English major freshmen National University of Mongolia (NUM).
The data comprised a self-evaluation questionnaire, a questionnaire to explore how students utilize learning strategies, and a test to examine how students acquire reading strategies. The study has found that in order to promote the learners’ reading comprehension and effective reading strategies, the teachers are required to improve their methods on development of students’ reading skills and to encourage the learners’ self-study abilities.
