Artistic critique - where should it proceed?
Abstract
How must we advance literary criticism? Concepts from the past are becoming organized and understandable. Old ideas are joining up with new lines of development, changing their forms, and being revived. Looking at scholars' writings from the past 20 years we do not see anyone arguing that literary criticism is unnecessary, that it should be allowed to drown and disappear in the chatter of society, or that it hinders the development of literature and writers.
The decline of real literary criticism leads to the spread of “literary kitchen gossip and pedantic chatter”, the loss of warm and close discussions of literature, and the spread of jealous gutter attacks among critics. The untalented brag, the talented suffer, the lazy succeed, the diligent lose out. Literary competitions, ratings, and prizes lose all meaning. The critic's opinion means nothing to the author: “This is what I think, this is what I see, this is what I feel; I have no need to please others; it is enough to me if only one or two others understand my work; your opinion matters nothing to me”. Authors who imitate Western writers without understanding them make grand claims. No one understands the value of literature today.
