About Khitan numerals and Heavenly Stems

Abstract

The Khitan script, created by the Khitan people during the Liao Dynasty, is a distinctive writing system. As crucial components of the Khitan language, its numerals and Heavenly Stems hold significant importance for understanding the language. This paper focuses on the numerals “one” to “ten” in Khitan script and the Heavenly Stems, systematically tracing their evolution from large to small character interpretations and phonetic value reconstructions. It also examines current research developments in this field.
