The Khujirt coal deposit is located in Orkhon-Selenge area which includes Khangai and Khovsgol mountains. The basement geology of the area is composed of Precambrain metamorphic complexes overlain by Paleozoic tubidites containing marine fossils and volcanic-plutonic rocks (Badarch et al., 2002). The Khujirt deposit contains 5 coal seams. Coal-bearing the Shariin Gol formation is subdivided into 3 members. The lower part of the formation is composed of conglomerate, gravel and sandstone. The middle part of the formation consists of sandstone, siltsone and coal seams. The upper part is mainly mudstone with siltstone and sandstone. Petrographical studies of the Khujirt deposit confirmed that coals are characterized by 71.7-81.5% vol. % huminite, 11.9-28.3 vol. % inertinite, and 2.4-8.0 vol. % liptinite. Coals of the Khujirt deposits have 5.1 wt% moisture, 44.73% volatile matter, and 13.49% ash content. The average calorific value is 4289 kcal/kg. Coal rank of the Khujirt deposit is subbituminous.
