Abstract

Analysis of some concepts of Abhidharmakosha in the historical source texts of Mongolian Buddhism

Historical sources of the spread of Buddhism in Mongolia often refer to the Abhidharmakosha, which was composed by the Indian philosopher Vasubandhu. For example, historical sources including “White History”, Sumbe Khanbo Ishbaljir‘s(1704-1788) "History of rise, progress. and downfall of Buddhism in India, Tibet, China and Mongolia, a wish-fulfilling Kalpavriksha tree”, Dharmadala's "The clear narrator of white lotus rosary, how to spread the Supreme Dharma in the land of Great Mongolia", ", Zava Damdin's (1867-1937) " The Golden book of the spread of Buddhism in Great Mongolia" cited from some concepts of Abhidharmakosa.

The cosmological ideas in Abhidharmakosha, the position, directions, and shapes of the continents, the unique characteristics of the body and the age of the living beings in there, the ideology and content of the Buddhist teachings, the translation process and date of Abhidharmakosha into Mongolian language, honoring Mongolian kings as Chakravartin king” is quoted in the sources mentioned above.

The presentation aims to analyze the above concepts and discover how Abhidharmakosha's influence affected Mongolian Buddhist historiography
