Үндэстний, угсаатны, арьстны, эсвэл шашны бүлгийг бүхэлд нь болон хэсэгчлэн устгах зорилготой үйлдлийг НҮБ геноцид гэж тодорхойлдог (UN). Геноцид нь олон хэлбэртэй байж болох бөгөөд аливаа бүлгийн гишүүдэд оюун санааны ноцтой хохирол (mental harm) учруулах, амьдралын нөхцлийг (conditions of life) нь бусниулах, нөхөн үржилд нь саад болох (prevent births within the group), үр хүүхдийг нь өөр бусад рүү албадан шилжүүлэх (forcibly transferring children of the group to another group) зэрэг үйлдлийг ч геноцид гэж үздэг (UN). Чухам тийм ч учир аливаа бүлгийн хэл, соёлыг устгах зорилготой үйлдлийг хэлний, соёлын геноцид гэж үздэг (жишээ нь Skuthabb-Kangas 2000; Bachman 2019, Tiemessen 2023).
