Abstract

This article discusses the critical analysis of mass media of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu discusses influences of mass media on other social spheres and its contradictory internal logic. Bourdieu argues mass media always tries to become a real “mass media”, but, at the same time, always slips away from its ideal. Bourdieu argues contemporary mass media becomes an instrument of symbolic power for particular social groups and establishes its own social domain with its peculiar logic. Bourdieu makes critical remark that mass media intrudes the domain of social sciences and “corrupts” it. At the same time, Bourdieu argues, social sciences themselves possess a tendency to have a support of mass media to establish their influence on society apart from traditional academic spheres. Neverthe-less, Bourdieu affirms that mass media remains one of the important channels for social scientists to bring their voice to the public and try to influence the change in society.
