There has been public criticism of
the way media reports on crime and
violence is violence itself. The criticism is
caused by following reasons as reporters'
attitude and preconditioning when they
question their sources and how they
portray and show victims and possible
suspects' images on the photo and video
reports. Furthermore, it becomes media
abuse and media violence towards the
audience when the media covers and
sensationalizes these types of dark and
sensitive topics frequently and on a large scale in the name of alarming and preventing the public from these crimes
and so on.
Nonetheless, it's getting more
common day by day that media workers
commonly practice unlawful and unethical
behaviors during the news-gathering
process. It could be pressuring
sources/public figures to give them an
interview, harassing them during an
ambush interview with a rolling camera
and microphone literally without sources'
content and apparent will to not be filmed
in it. Still, the media workers protect their
actions under the shield of media freedom
law and the public right to be informed.
This paper aims to show
theoretical and practical approaches
addressing what media harassment is
when it comes to journalists/reporters
causes fear to their news sources and
audience, how to fix this issue based on
journalism ethics, and what kind of topics
lead media workers to violate journalism
ethics and to harass sources and public
based on case studies.
Understanding how one careless
and unprofessional decision of media and
journalist who doesn't have human rights
knowledge, common sense, and
professional ethics are becoming the
reason for numerous negative social
phenomena in the end that could harm
ordinary citizens and the public in general
and contribute to spread certain
stereotypes and damage other's
reputation, dignity, and health.
