Abstract

Journalism in Mongolia has history of
over 110 years of development. The country
has transitioned to a democratic system and
has fostered an independent media sector,
yet this article identifies several persisting
challenges.
In the context of new media
development and the increasing popularity of
internet and social networks, the media
industry faces the imperative of
differentiation and innovation. This article
argues that the media sector needs to
enhance its management capacity, achieve
financial autonomy by diversifying its
revenue sources, improve the legal
framework, clarify the relations between
government agencies and media outlets,
and develop a code of journalistic ethics.
