Abstract

This review article examines the impact of AI-based synthetic media, particularly deepfake technology, on political communication. The study explores theoretical frameworks, including agenda-setting, framing, and priming, in the context of algorithm-driven media environments. It also analyzes the mechanisms of information manipulation enabled by synthetic media and reviews the current legal framework in Mongolia. The findings indicate that synthetic media significantly transforms information ecosystems by increasing the realism, speed, and reach of manipulated content. While existing legal frameworks partially address related issues, they do not adequately cover the specific characteristics of AI-generated content. The study highlights the need for updated regulatory approaches, including content labeling, platform accountability, and policy reforms tailored to emerging technologies.
