Abstract
The historic meeting between Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and
Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in May 1989 signaled the end of three decades of
Sino-Soviet hostility. The talks between Gorbachev and Den Xiaoping in Beijing
touched upon the sensitive issues of Sino-Soviet tensions since the 1950s and
included the issue of “lost territories.” The author analyzes the speeches by Deng
Xiaoping regarding historical issues written in his volume three of Deng Xiaoping’s
Selected Works published in the Chinese language in 1993 in Beijing. Deng
reiterated his position on the issue of the Mongolian People’s Republic, which was
incorporated into the USSR sphere of influence as a “lost territory of China.” The
author examines the historical lessons and legacies from the historical meeting
held between the leaders of the two neighboring countries and concluded that the
historic opportunity emerged for Mongolia to break decade-long isolation and join
the international community by the end of the 1980s.
