Abstract
During the 1950’s, the competition between the USSR and PRC for
Mongolia intensified which impacted the U.S. policy toward Asia. Therefore, U.S.
President, John F. Kennedy’s administration initiated diplomatic relations with the
People’s Republic of Mongolia by setting up a diplomatic mission in Ulaanbaatar
as a “listening post” during the Sino-Soviet split, to collect important information
regarding these countries. Prior to the Kennedy administration, and during the
Eisenhower administration, some American scholars, researchers and newspaper
correspondents from the “New York Times” and other officials visited our country.
Their purpose was to collect necessary information about Mongolia which was
developing a socialist society. The books, research articles, newspaper columns
and information written by these people impacted the views and tendencies of
the U.S. policymakers regarding Mongolia. This article covers the views of the
influential scholars and officials who met and exchanged their opinions with the
political and government leaders of socialist Mongolia.
