Abstract

Throughout the 15 th and the 16 th centuries, the Mongols were scourge of the Nortern Chinese border areas, and they grew ever border and more aggressive as the military organization of the Ming weakened and financial difficulties increased. Attacks were most frequent from around 1540 on; In the circles of historiography, the research on Altan Khan is of considerable significance, for it constitutes an indispensible component of the entire Mongolian historical research. The research on Altan Khan shall not only involve the evaluation on his merits and demerits in his life and the historical role he has played, but also, more importantly, shall help us get a clear picture of the complex period in Mongolian history after Altan Khan. We are find a few Chinese documents discussed in the following pages are: 16 an imperial rescript from 1571 whereby Altan Khan, the chieftain of the Twelve Tumed
Mongols in the region of modern Sui yuan, was granted the title of Shun Yi Wang ; 2. an imperial rescript granting honorary military ranks to sixty-three Mongol nobleman, all relatives or subjects of Altan khan, whose names also appear as co-signatories of the document.
