This paper analyses the challenges of translating words and expressions that express emotion within the context of a selected novels. In the first part, we discuss how emotion is expressed through Mongolian and French language, exploring different theories of emotion and outlining what exactly is defined as an “emotion word and expression”. It argues that there are often multiple possible translations. The role of words or expressions denoting different types of emotions in reproducing the emotional charge of a literary text in translation, the necessity to preserve the signification and impact of such words in the text and choice of positive and negative emotion words and expressions are discussed. We come to the conclusion that the translation deviation from the original is predetermined by the difference in the ways emotions are expressed and such words are used by different cultures and literary traditions.
