Division of labor and gender in animal husbandry: the case of young herders

Abstract

As nomads, Mongolians herd their livestock and move to a distinct grazing area every season to cope with extreme and harsh natural and climate conditions. The traditional division of labour remains strong in nomadic herding, such as women milk animals and process dairy, and men mainly carry out otor (long-distance migration of Mongolian herders, typically in autumn, to fatten livestock for winter), move from one place to another, take care of animals, and make hay.
