Abstract

Analyzing the state of religious belief and religious attitudes of contemporary Japanese people

Foreign researchers consider the Japanese people as 'non-religious' and 'irreligious'. According to the results of international research conducted on global religious practices, in most cases, the Japanese are perceived to be 'a nation without any religion'. Moreover, according to research conducted by Japanese research institutions, it is not possible to identify the religion of the Japanese people directly. For instance, a high percentage of respondents may be identified as 'atheists', while those who answer to be 'religious' often follow two or more faiths. In this article, we have considered the current state of the religion and the way the Japanese view religion.
