Abstract

Yuan Play (元曲) is a literary genre written in the 13th-14th centuries, and it retains the characteristics of the medieval language in its literary style and historical narrative (典故).

In the article take sentences with Mongolian words from Yuan Plays as an example, and proposes a method of glossing the archaic words in the sentence based on historical documents. The article demonstrates the usefulness of adding explanations, footnotes, and the use of translation glossing/footnoting methods when translating archaic chinese words preserved in sentences with the words "hudag, gudamj, hishigten, mori, buurch, ulaach, bogtag". It also demonstrates the Mongolian loanwords introduced into Chinese such as "hudag, gudam, sauha, dah" with real examples in Yuan Plays.
