Abstract

Mongolians have skilfully translated a number of the best fictional works of China, a long-time neighbor since ancient times. One of them is "A Newly Translated Ulaan Asriin Zuud" by Khasbuu. This work is the Mongolian version of the work "Ulaan Asriin Zuud" or the first version translated from Chinese to a foreign language.

During our exploration, we observed the following. It includes:

  • When Khasbuu translated the novel "Ulaan Asriin Zuud" into Mongolian, based on the theory and methodology of traditional Chinese literary criticism, he made a perfectly rational review with emphasis after each chapter. When the author translated 120 chapters of this work by abridging it into 40 chapters, 13 chapters of the original text were completely changed, some contents of 86 chapters were changed, and 30 chapters were not translated at all. In doing so, he translated it into the Mongolian language very skillfully without destroying the main meaning, vivid description, and artistic features of the novel.
  • More than 70 foreign words are used in the work, and they were mainly nouns borrowed from Chinese, Tibetan, and Manchu languages, and verbs were very rare.
