Abstract

           In today's fast-paced world of science and technology, there is a constant need to name new discoveries, inventions, things, and phenomena. A Metaphorical approach has been commonly used for naming those new things because it makes people percept concepts easily. In this study, we selected B.Jigjidsuren's “Business English-Mongolian Dictionary” (2006) with about 5,000 words to study methods used to translate English metaphoric terms into Mongolian. There are 190 English metaphoric terms in the dictionary, of which 78% are in semantic translation, 10% are calqued (word for word translation), 4% are translated with another equivalent metaphoric terms, 3% are translated in simple equivalent words, 3% are translated in explanation, and 2% are directly borrowed. Metaphoric terms are similar to realia (culture-specific words). So when you translate the metaphoric terms, you need to take consideration on the linguistic, cognitive, and cultural differences between the source and target language speakers.
