Abstract

            This study was carried out to identify current situation and issues of transliteration of Mongolian words into Latin scripts. According to the purpose, we conducted a survey to investigate whether people are facing with a problem in connection with the transliteration of Cyrillic Mongolian characters into Latin characters and if so, why it is happening and what characters are difficult to make them converted. In this survey, four types of groups, “Mongol messenger” (an English language newspaper), “Chingis Khaan” (a book translated from Mongolian to English), Mobicom and Unitel companies (telecommunications service providers) and social media users were involved. The social media users in the survey were randomly selected. The result of the survey showed that 1) There is a problem in the process of transferring a word from the alphabet of Mongolian Cyrillic language to Latin alphabet. 2) The transliteration of four Mongolian Cyrillic characters such as “ө”, “ү”, “х”, and “в” into Latin characters are confusing and those characters are being used in a mixing way. 3) Therefore, individuals and organizations haven’t been completely complied with the MNS5217:2012 standard, transliteration of Mongolian even it had been approved in 2012. 4) However, the standard is somewhat limited to the computer and other mobile devices and it causes mistransliteration.
